Wallopware
is Thomas William-Powlett

On his web site, you'll find you'll find some excellent teaching programs which he wrote when he was a science teacher.

They're popular with our students, and he's giving them away for free these days.

They include:-
Labels, a a set of biology diagram-labelling exercises. When each diagram is correctly labelled, the student is invited to click & match organs and their functions. Aimed at Key Stage 3.

Rock Cycle, Carbon Cycle, and Nitrogen Cycle are in a similar style to Labels. There's also B_Ionic, which deals with Ionic Bonding, and Insulate, which models the effect on your heating bills of double glazing, loft insulation, etc.

If you're looking for nifty little programs to support particular items in the Key Stage 3 and 4 syllabuses, this site is well worth a visit: www.wallopware.com

www.countingthoughts.com is a scientific consultancy that develops software for teaching and research.

They produce a complete computer-based course in secondary school physics, called SUREHigherPhysics, aimed at the Scottish Higher course but eminently suitable for English schools.

This is excellent stuff to use on an interactive whiteboard!

 "Weed",
a shareware simulation of a pondweed photosynthesis experiment
Screenshot of Weed program

This program is written by Neil Barnett, a science teacher, for use at school. The classic pondweed photosynthesis experiment works well, but takes a long time to get results, especially if you want to investigate the factors that affect the rate of oxygen production. This program allows students to adjust the light levels, water temperature and amount of CO2 and see the effects quickly. Graphs can be plotted and printed, and the program is supplied with teacher notes. By asking students to produce a full set of graphs from the program, you would have a ready-made consolidation/extension lesson to follow the traditional practical.

I've written a Key Stage 3 and a Key Stage 4 research task worksheet (Word format) to go with this program, and the author now includes them with sales to schools.

Written by James Webb (Pulsar Publishing), this highly graphical program contains an impressive amount of information about our Solar System. The really impressive part is that it’ll even run on a 386 processor, and the full version only costs around £15.

It's really easy to use, and great for lessons where students research the Solar System.
