What are turbines?

Turbines are rather like propellors on a boat, or fans.
In this topic, we meet three types of turbine:-

Steam Turbines, which consist of many blades on a long shaft, like the inside of a jet engine.

Steam blows them round, turning the shaft, which drives a generator.

Water Turbines, which look a little like an ammonite shell: a wheel with bucket-shaped blades around the rim.

Water "blows" them round, and they drive generators in hydro-electric power stations.

Wind turbines, find out more on the 'wind power' page.
